Most of all our energy resources can be traced to solar energy. Wind, hydroelectric, biomass and subsurface fossil fuels are solar based energy sources.
Fuel is stored energy. Creating energy is one thing but storing it is another.
Solar and wind energy are great but they have a problem in that they are not always available. We need power 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It is helpful that wind and solar energy are mainly produced during peak demand times but we must still have energy during the off peak. We do not currently have any large scale storage capabilities or any practical emerging technologies that could handle the vast amounts of energy that would need to be stored even if we had enough wind and solar available. We see biomass/biocarbon as filling the baseload needs as well as providing high energy density carbon neutral fuels.
